I'm going to try a few period lamps in camp next event to see how viable they may be. These links have an explanation of how to make and use them. The advantage I see is safety and availability of fuel. If one of these gets knocked over while lit it self extinguishes while tiki torches ignite whatever they fall on. And they use non volatile fuel available year round. I'll try a few around the bar for ambiance if nothing else.

I did a test with a couple lamps so far. It's dirt cheap to make them too . $1 for a small glass round vase the size of a softball from Michaels , 30 cents for some 12 gauge copper wire to make a wick holder, and wicks made from cotton mop head fibers. Under two bucks makes a period lamp.

I tried a few different oils and Canola oil burned the most consistently . Olive oil was the period Roman fuel but I had trouble getting to flow well in the wick. Soybean oil burned brightly but flickered a lot. Two ounces of oil burned for about 4 hours so it's cheaper than candles and tikis to run.

How do they hold up to wind/weather? Tikis will burn in a pretty strong breeze, which is the only good thing about them.

You mount the wick holder about 1.5" below the lid of the glass vase so it's more wind resistant than a candle . With a wick the size of a tiki wick it may be comparable and kick off as much light. I'll have to test it.

These probably won't give more than 3-4x candle power without starting to burn the wicks up since the oil needs to heat to combust. Nonetheless, it seems VERY worth looking into. Besides, the more material in the wick, the more potential oil being drawn to the flame, it may just be a matter of finding the appropriate wick thickness to flame size ratio...

We could string this up and attach them to nails/hooks on a tree. That way the tree facing side of the lantern is sheltered from wind.

if that is done you would want a reflective dish of some kind on the tree side as well

Here you go. I had three of them going last night and the wind did not blow them out and they gave off good light.
